Hydrogen exchange initiative

HyXchange publishes Simulation results and HYCLICX price indicator for spot market Hydrogen

Hydrogen exchange initiative HyXchange presents first results from Hydrogen spot market simulation, and HYCLICX variable-price indicator for Hydrogen.  Today, HyXchange published its first issue of the HYCLICX variable-price indicator for hydrogen based on...

Field test leads to launch of first Green Hydrogen certificates in Europe

Hydrogen exchange initiative HyXchange presents successful pilot of Guarantees of Origin for green hydrogen, operational in the Netherlands as of October this year. The issue of green Guarantees of Origin for hydrogen in the Netherlands has started as of October 2022....

Minister Jetten receives first certificate for green hydrogen

Today, Rob Jetten, Dutch Minister of Climate and Energy, received the first certificate for green hydrogen during a visit to North Sea Port in Terneuzen. These certificates facilitate the trade in hydrogen, as envisaged by HyXchange. Thus, HyXchange contributes to the...

Creation ‘HyXchange’ hydrogen exchange a step closer

Research into the practical setup of a hydrogen exchange in the Netherlands has clarified the products and conditions that will be required to create trade for hydrogen. They include hydrogen certification, an index that would make prices transparent, a spot market...

Hydrogen exchange offers opportunities for a Hydrogen market

A hydrogen exchange, along the lines of the electricity and gas exchanges, could act as a catalyst for a market for climate-neutral hydrogen. It could also help the economic growth of a hydrogen market. This is evident from the exploratory study, ‘A Hydrogen Exchange...

H2 Spot Market Simulation (H2SMS)

The study seeks to establish a robust blueprint for a hydrogen exchange in the Netherlands that enables a gradual build-up of a hydrogen exchange covering an expanding geographical market catalysing the envisioned hydrogen system development. This project will be executed by HyXchange, TNO and Berenschot. The scope of the project includes Gent (BE) and Nordrhein-Westfalen (NRW, DE), as well as the broader NW-European energy system for which calculations will be performed.

The project is funded by TKI New-Gas, Gasunie, four Dutch seaport authorities and two provincies. (Intermediate) results are discussed with a selection of market parties and will be used in the next steps of the development of the  Hydrogen Exchange.

Certification pilot

HyXchange is the H2 exchange initiative supporting the development of a H2 market hub around planned Dutch H2 transmission pipeline infrastructure with significance to European H2 supply and imports from outside the EU. With the pilot, HyXchange aims to further accelerate H2 trading by enabling the exchange of certificates, more specifically GOs for low carbon and renewable H2. In total 18 companies were actively participating in this pilot, supported by the ICT platform developed and operated by Vertogas, the government mandated GO issuing body.

The HyXchange initiative

This Hydrogen Exchange Initiatieve (HyXchange) explores the possibilities and prerequisites for esthablishing a hydrogen exchange. This hydrogen exchange is made possible by the anticipated role of hydrogen as an important new climate-neutral energy carrier in the
energy transition. This gives a hydrogen exchange added value: as a catalyst in the build-upphase of the market, and as a facility for better economic optimisation once the hydrogen market is mature.

HyXchange is supported by Gasunie, Port of Rotterdam, Port of Amsterdam, Groningen Seaports and North Sea Ports.

About Us

The HyXchange initative aims to realize a trading platform for hydrogen on the main Dutch hydrogen infrastructure (“the hydrogen backbone”), including the global imports there and the European countries associated with it.

“Every day, we work with partners on developing the Dutch hydrogen supply chain because we have confidence in the opportunities that hydrogen presents, both in terms of climate targets and our economy. Our gas trading site TTF now houses Europe’s largest virtual market for natural gas. A hydrogen exchange could have the same catalytic effect on the market forces driving hydrogen”

Ulco Vermeulen, Gasunie

“The future Dutch hydrogen economy consists six key components: supply (offshore wind), demand (an industrial cluster), infrastructure (hydrogen backbone), import of hydrogen via Dutch ports, storage (Zuidwending) and a trading facility (HyXchange).”

Richard Middel, Groningen Seaports

"In the vicinity of North Sea Ports there is a vast potential for green hydrogen production from offshore wind and a solid industrial base with an large existing and quickly growing demand for green hydrogen and/or ammonia. HyXchange plays an important role to create a hydrogen market platform, including the required certification scheme. This is crucial to develop the hydrogen ecosystem within ports like North Sea Port."

Maarten den Dekker, North Sea Ports
